Installing the NN4ZZ Tiltplate
(Making Life WAY Easier!)

The hardest part of installing the Tiltplate had nothing to do with the TiltPlate - it was relocating the wiring for the 4 element SteppIR. I needed to move the protective wiring connector housing. As a result, I had to remove and then reinstall all of the wires on the connector strips for the stepper motors for the elements. But that only took about 15 minutes.

After the SteppIR was mounted, I had a few things to check, adjust, and generally be sure it was ready to go back up in the air. The BEST part was knowing that this was as high as it gets! Compared to working on antennas at the top of a tower or a 24 foot exftension ladder, my level of "concern" was MUCH reduced, post-TiltPlate installation, as I stood safely on the ground!

A note to make it easier if you are planning on installing a TiltPlate - when you install your beam, be sure to tilt the beam about 5 degrees low on the end of the elements that are AWAY from the tower. That will result in it being level when you raise it in the air. The TiltPlate has a slight offset to it when it's in the "operating" position and the tower is vertical. Details are on Al's web site. I guessed right the first time.

The next step, after the antenna is re-installed, is to crank it up in the air to test it out. It was with great relief (and a lot less effort now that I was using my 1/2 inch drill to raise and lower the tower) as I cranked the US Tower TX-455 back up in the air, knowing that the next time I needed to do some antenna work, it would ALL be done at ground level!

Finally, the project was finished, and I was back on the air!

The TiltPlate has made antenna work enjoyable again! No need to climb ladders or the tower to do the work! And it's one HECK of a lot safer! My deepest thanks to Al, NN4ZZ, for creating this ingenious device!

After completing the project, and knowing how much easier it will be to work on the antennas/tower next time, it gives you a LOT more time to relax, contemplate the contest season or chase that rare DX!
